- Where discovery is enjoyment too
|
The Rheinisch-Bergisch district is an El Dorado for explorers and an oasis for those who enjoy the good things in life. The area directly at the gates of Cologne is home to 278 770 people over 438 square kilometres. A third of the area includes wide expanses of woodlands, rivers, dams and brooks. Here, visitors and local residents can move in harmony with nature. Horse riding, cycling and rambling are genuine experiences in this countryside. |
A hospitable culture in a natural environment The Rheinisch-Bergisch district is a combination of six cities Bergisch Gladbach, Burscheid, Leichlingen, Overath, Rösrath, Wermelskirchen and two communities Kürten and Odenthal. The region also offers a wide range in cultural terms. Palaces, castles, churches, concerts and galleries are an invitation to the pleasures of the eye and ear. Furthermore, the stars shine more brightly over the region in the south west of North Rhine-Westphalia than in other areas. Epicures and gourmets are in seventh heaven here. Several highly praised star chefs invite the visitor to the ultimate pleasures of the palate. Well managed restaurants and cosy bars also pride themselves in Rhenish hospitality. In the region between the Rhine, Wupper and Sieg, wellness temples also however guarantee a balance between body and mind.
Tradition and modernity Paper mills and steam hammers on the many rivers and brooks shaped the long economic development. Paper production began as early as in the 16th century. In museums and industrial monuments, the memory of the blossoming industrialisation of the 19th century is kept alive. Today, the principal town of the district, Bergisch Gladbach, stands for the manufacture of the highest quality paper.
The Rheinisch-Bergisch district does not owe its name for example to the hilly topography, but to the Count of Berg, who in gaining land benefited above all from the friendship with Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossa.
